Help me summit Kilimanjaro for human rights
Story
- At 5895 metres (19,341 feet) tall, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is the tallest free-standing mountain in the world (rather than being part of a mountain range).
- At sea level, the atmosphere is around 21% oxygen. At 5895m, there are 60% fewer oxygen molecules. Despite increased breathing, it is not possible to attain normal levels of oxygen in the blood/brain at high altitudes.
- During ascent, the body has to adapt or “acclimatise” to the decreasing amount of oxygen available. If the ascent is too fast, these mechanisms will not have time to work and symptoms of altitude sickness appear.
- Many ecological systems are found on the mountain: savannah bush land, rain forest, sub-alpine moorland, alpine desert and an arctic summit.
Activity
Amnesty International Australia
Amnesty International believes in equal human rights for all. Amnesty International Australia is part of the global movement of more than 7 million individuals committed to defending those who are denied justice or freedom. We work in Australia and around the world to stand up to injustice and protect those facing abuse. To do this, we mobilise people, campaign, conduct research and raise money for our work.
