Help me summit Kilimanjaro for human rights

Story

I'm taking on the challenge of a lifetime, taking part in Amnesty International's Climb Kilimanjaro in 2015.

In doing so, I am also raising funds for Amnesty International Australia to assist them in their promotion of human rights and support for those facing injustice and abuse around the globe. Please help me raise vital funds to hold warlords and dictators accountable, encourage governments to respect human rights, free prisoners of conscience, promote respect for Indigenous peoples and boldly defend human rights in every corner of the world.

TARGETS:
Our goal is to reach AUD$2000 by July 25th 2014 and AUD$4100 by January 19th 2015. I think we can do better! =D

A few facts about Mount Kilimanjaro:

  • At 5895 metres (19,341 feet) tall, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is the tallest free-standing mountain in the world (rather than being part of a mountain range).
  • At sea level, the atmosphere is around 21% oxygen. At 5895m, there are 60% fewer oxygen molecules. Despite increased breathing, it is not possible to attain normal levels of oxygen in the blood/brain at high altitudes.
  • During ascent, the body has to adapt or “acclimatise” to the decreasing amount of oxygen available. If the ascent is too fast, these mechanisms will not have time to work and symptoms of altitude sickness appear.
  • Many ecological systems are found on the mountain: savannah bush land, rain forest, sub-alpine moorland, alpine desert and an arctic summit.
